American Imperialism
1. Puerto Rico - some want independence, some want statehood
- US takes PR as a territory...the debate continues today
2. Cuba was declared independent, but occupied by US military
- Cuban Constitution included the Platt Amendment
-no foreign powers in Cuba
-US can intervene
-US can have naval bases (Guantanamo Bay)
- US wanted to protect business interests. Lasted until Castro in 1950s.
3. US had to put down rebellion in Philippines in 1899...set up government similar to Puerto Rico. Lasted until 1946.
4. Philippines provide US with path to Asia, specifically China
- John Hay creates Open Door Policy to open trade
- Chinese reluctant to trade with west
-Boxer Rebellion
